Help Taking the On-Line Course

What type of problem are you encountering? Select a link above.

What are the system requirements?

A computer running Windows 95,98, ME, 2000, or XP, with the latest service pacs installed. You will need a high-speed connection to the Internet, a browser (the latest version of Internet Explorer is recommended to ensure that the sound features work properly), mouse and keyboard. Because the Espa?ol for Law Enforcement training uses audio to speak the Spanish words and phrases your computer must be equipped with a sound card and have speakers or headphones. To support the videos you will need Windows media player and the java console installed.

Note: Many newer computers do not have a sound card; the hardware is installed on the motherboard. So the above information may not apply to your computer. Check with your supervisor to verify.

Can I connect over dial-up?

The Espa?ol for Law Enforcement training uses audio to speak the Spanish words and phrases to teach pronunciation. There are video introductions and scenarios that require a high-bandwidth connection. While the program will download and run over a dial-up connection, it will do so very slowly and is not recommended.

The Next Arrow .

When you come to a screen and the Next arrow is disabled or dim, that means that means you are likely at the "Main Menu" screen or a "question" screen that requires you to submit a response.

  • Question screen - When you get to a question screen, the Next arrow will not be active until you respond "correctly" to the given question.

I don't hear the audio.

There may be several reasons why you are unable to hear the audio for this course. Be sure to double check that:
  • Speakers are turned on
  • Speaker cord is connected to the computer
  • Speakers are plugged in to a power outlet
  • Volume is turned up to an audible level
  • Volume has not been set to mute
  • Make sure the speakers or headphones work; try playing something that you know works, like an MP3 file
If the items listed above do not help resolve your audio problem then try the following:
  • Install the latest version of Windows Media Player (WMP). For this course, it is recommended you install:

Any older WMP players may not be as reliable on newer operating systems.
  • The system may be behind a firewall or some other security measure that prevents audio from
streaming; Contact a supervisor to determine if this is an issue
